After introducing the “nofollow” tag, other than for its intended use, many web masters used this tag to manipulate the link juice that was passing through the out-bound links of a particular page. We all know outbound links of a page are passing the link juice (PR value) from originating page to the target page.

In the following example original page has a total of 100 page rank value. This will be equally distributed among 4 out-going links, hence each carrying a value of 25 to its target page. (* assuming no decay factor)

Upon receiving an invitation from my Chennai friend – Sorav Jain, whom I met over social media – to conduct a session at the Social Media Marketing workshop in Chennai, I made a short visit to India in January 2011. Being my first visit to India, it was very much exciting and memorable.

It was a two days workshop conducted in a boot camp style for a small group. Sorav took the first introductory session followed by me on Facebook Marketing.

Social Media Marketing is relatively a new concept not only to Sri Lanka, but also to the entire world. For many traditional marketing professionals, social media is just another marketing channel, tool or a tactic. Similarly for IT professionals it is another platform for them to show their design creativity and/or programing skills. It is really worrying that many business professionals have failed to understand the fundamental shift taking place in the customer behaviour and opportunities arising from such a change. The situation is no better in Sri Lanka. Specially when we see how  big brands/companies (which claim to have  a strong online presence), use social media for their marketing communication activities without any regard to the commonly accepted social media marketing principals, it becomes obviously clear that their assessment, understanding and readiness to social media marketing is far from the ideal one can expect.

Social Media is catching fire. Erik Qualman, the author of “Socialnomics“, through one of his greatest creations, “Social Media Revolution video“, convinces us that it is the biggest shift taking place in the word since the industrial revolution. This video was one of the most influential resources I found, which made me allocate much of my time for reading and practicing social media marketing. In one section of this video, there is this astonishing piece of information

To reach 50 million users

  • Radio took 38 years
  • TV took 13 years
  • Internet took 4 years

From year 2000 to 2009 was clearly the Google era in Internet Marketing. “Google” as a verb was added to the Oxford English dictionary in 2006. By now Google has almost become synonymous to “Search”. While SEO was taken out of its black-box, Google revolutionized the whole Internet marketing industry with its Pay-per-Click advertising program, making it the largest online advertising model in the world.

While Google was making maps with their Apps and Labs to dominate the web, its supremacy is being threatened by the popularity of “web 2.0 and social media”, paving the path for the dawn of the new era in Internet Marketing.  This has led to a clear shift in previously dominant online marketing approaches from link and list building to acquiring fans and followers and securing more likes and recommendations.

While I was preparing my presentations on Web 2.0 for my workshops, I did some research in the Internet to find a what definitions are available and how this concept is explained specially in a way that can be understood by the people who are not really Internet marketers or new to Internet marketing. Even though there were some really good resources, it was a bit worrying that I could not find something that serve my purpose. I specially wanted some content with visual aids so that the audience can visualize the concept and can relate to their day to day activities on the Internet.  Objective of my today’s article is to create the content what I could not find when I needed it. I hope this will be a useful resource for people who have the same need.
