Upon receiving an invitation from my Chennai friend – Sorav Jain, whom I met over social media – to conduct a session at the Social Media Marketing workshop in Chennai, I made a short visit to India in January 2011. Being my first visit to India, it was very much exciting and memorable.
It was a two days workshop conducted in a boot camp style for a small group. Sorav took the first introductory session followed by me on Facebook Marketing.
Travel and Tourism sector is one of the main industries in the world which is being positively impacted by the Internet usage of the customers and online implementations by existing business firms at different stages of their value delivery chains. But the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is still not getting the maximum benefit of these trends due to many reasons and the knowledge gap in the industry on Internet Marketing concepts and techniques appears to be one of the top reasons among many others.
Following the success of our first social media marketing workshop held in August 2010, which was the first ever workshop of that nature organized in Sri Lanka on this subject, we have been getting many request from various people and companies to organize another similar session.
So we decided to organize our 2nd Social Media Marketing Workshop on the 13th November 2010. This time we were able to add more colors to this event by joining hands with 3 other experts in the digital marketing field.
Social Media Marketing is relatively a new concept not only to Sri Lanka, but also to the entire world. For many traditional marketing professionals, social media is just another marketing channel, tool or a tactic. Similarly for IT professionals it is another platform for them to show their design creativity and/or programing skills. It is really worrying that many business professionals have failed to understand the fundamental shift taking place in the customer behaviour and opportunities arising from such a change. The situation is no better in Sri Lanka. Specially when we see how big brands/companies (which claim to have a strong online presence), use social media for their marketing communication activities without any regard to the commonly accepted social media marketing principals, it becomes obviously clear that their assessment, understanding and readiness to social media marketing is far from the ideal one can expect.
